Problem: Determine whether the following individuals are employed, unemployed, underemployed, discouraged worker or not in the labor force.

1. Shasta is waiting for her new job to start.

2. Mary worked only 25 hours last week.

3. Karen neither has a job nor is looking for one.

4. Brian is a full-time student and is not looking for work.

5. Kate is on temporary layoff.

6. Heath has retired and is not looking for work.

7. Jay was an employee, but his company collapsed in 2009 recession.

8. Jane does not have a job, but has applied for several in the last week.

9. Holly is an unpaid homemaker.

10. Cody does not have a job, but is looking for work.

11. Curtis is a stockbroker. He has had several job offers, but he has turned them down because he thinks he can find a firm that better matches his tastes and skills.

12. John is an accountant. He has looked for work for some time, but no accounting firms are hiring.

13. In hopes of earning higher income Bruce goes back to graduate school to get higher education.

14. Last week, Elizabeth worked 10 hours as a computer programmer for the National Video Company and attended night classes at the local college. She would prefer a full-time job.

15. Scott has a bachelor's degree. He worked full-time but doesn't like his job as a dishwasher. He has applied for jobs with thirty different companies. As soon as he gets an offer, he will quit his current job.

16. Mary-Helen has been out of work for a full year. She would take a job if it was offered, but no local companies are hiring. She is not actively searching for work.
