Determine whether a special education service is needed

Problem:

Mike is a funny 4-year-old boy who lives with his mother, grandmother, and older sister. A complete personal and medical history was obtained via interview with Mike's mother. Mike was identified by his school district to have a developmental delay at age 2.5 years and previously was enrolled in early intervention program at his school at age 2.5years. Mike's mother reported that his attendance at the early intervention program was occasional due to transportation difficulties facing his family. His mother is not familiar with applied behavior analysis (ABA) services, but she stated Mike can get in-home sessions as other parents posted on social media. Although he had an early intervention program, the program is not rooted in the principle of applied behavior analysis concepts as the staff had only one Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and Mike didn't receive individualize behavior intervention plan (BIP) or any behavior assessment. Currently Mike's school district is trying to determine whether a special education service is needed when he enters kindergarten next year. Due to the current behavioral concerns, it was recommended by the social worker at the developmental pediatrician's clinic (where Mike was diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorder) to undergo functional analysis (FA).
