Designing the questionnaire


A Local Authority in Mauritius was concerned regarding social and environmental effects due to the amount of under-age drinking in the area. As part of a long-term strategy to promote the social sustainability, students from the University were asked to help design a questionnaire to be used in the survey of local school children in the area, with a view to remove the problem.

Question 1: Outline one benefit and one drawback of using a questionnaire.

Question 2: Describe the four main components that required to be considered when designing the questionnaire.

Question 3: Describe one reason why a pilot study must have been carried out in the context of this survey.

Question 4: Each question in the extract from the questionnaire (Figure above) is open to criticism. Choose one question and give a criticism of it.

Question 5: Re-write the question you chosen so that it overcomes the criticism you identified in

Question 6: Explain the two ways of making sure that this survey would be taken out in an ethically acceptable manner.

Question 7: Following the survey it was decided to conduct an observational study into under-age drinking. Outline in brief the procedures you would have taken for carrying out such an observation.
