Designing for growth a design thinking tool kit for

Your task: Make and share a commercialIdentify one DT tool - any one - that really resonates with you and make a quick video commercial explaining what the tool does, when you might use it, who it's for and why it's valuable.

The tool you select can from the recommended text, the materials I've referred to above, or your own research. If you're unsure that the tool you want to explore is the right kind of tool please ask!

Select one of Liedtke and Ogilvy's 10 tools or one of the four PMAs and consider how you might use that tool 'in real life'. Think about the circumstances that you might use the PMA, and what kind of insights using that tool would be good for and then make a 30second commercial to explain what the tool/PMA is, what it's for, how it adds value. To do this well you will need to think about who your target customer (or end user) of the tool might be and direct the communication to them. Why?

What are the objectives of this assignment?

  • this gives you an opportunity to get a high-level overview of the myriad of tools available before we do a deep dive - making sure that you have the opportunity to recognise in the future that there are many tools available and that suggestions I make are only suggestions;
  • it also gives you the opportunity to use technology that you may not be familiar with for a small assignment
  • it gives you an opportunity to present online
  • it gives all of us the opportunity to hear your voice and see your faces (unless you don't share them of course! )
  • it challenges you to do some research and get creative!
  • you the opportunity to use technology that you may not be familiar with for a small assignment
  • it gives you an opportunity to present online

  • it challenges you to do some research and get creative!

Weighting:The complete set of Individual formative assessment items are weighted at 30% of your total marks. This task is worth 20 of the 25 points available to you this week (or aproximately 2% of your overall mark)

Due Date: 29/07/18

Submission Format & instructions:Reply to this thread. Insert a heading that makes it clear which tool you're referring to and include a link to the materials you're drawing on or a reference to the sections of the text you used. Then use Arc to upload your video. Note, this discussion is set up so you can't see what anyone else has done until you've uploaded your own contribution. This assignment is not about cool production values - I don't want anyone to be intimidated by what others do! \

For more information about how to use ARC see this information: https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-9656-50736655688 (Links to an external site.) - This is a 'discussion' as opposed to a standard assignment format, but the information about how to upload into the textbox area will be helpful.

Assessment declaration: When you submit work electronically, you agree to the Assessment declaration (Links to an external site.).

Tasks

  • Choose a tool and reflect deeply on its use. Read the parts of your text that describe the use of the tool and look for examples in the case studies in your text of the tool being put to good use.
  • You might find it useful to use a story board to step out the scenes in your commercial
  • Film your commercial - you can simply film your face on your phone explaining the tools - or you can get creative. There is some information in the resources section below about tools that you can use. Remember, you're not being assessed on the quality of your production - but the extent to which it demonstrates that you understand what the tool is, what its for, how it might be used in the real world and what it's key features are.
  • have some fun with it!

Individual

This is an individual assignment, however, your commercial will be available for your colleagues to see and you are encouraged to comment on the work of your colleagues too.

Expectation

This activity will take 2-4 hours to complete.

Resources

The tools are described in this week's materialsm See: The 4 Questions and The 10 (+) Tools - and in Liedtka, Jeanne, author, & Ogilvie, Tim. (2011). Designing for growth : A design thinking tool kit for managers. New York: Columbia University Press (Links to an external site.).

Tools you might find useful to record your commercial:

  • Film directly into the 'reply' area in this discussion
  • check out Explain Everything (Links to an external site.) - this might be an option for you
  • most smart phones have a camera and tools that allow you to edit / upload a movie to youtube (you can create an account using your @rmit email address and set your movie to private or unlisted so others can't find it - but why not show off!
  • use the record feature in powerpoint and then save as a movie - see https://support.office.com/en-us/article/record-a-slide-show-with-narration-and-slide-timings-0b9502c6-5f6c-40ae-b1e7-e47d8741161c (Links to an external site.) and https://support.office.com/en-us/article/turn-your-presentation-into-a-video-c140551f-cb37-4818-b5d4-3e30815c3e83 (Links to an external site.)
