Psychology in Context: Designing a Liberation Informed Intervention Psychology has never existed outside of history, culture, or power. Throughout this course, we have examined how psychological knowledge has been shaped by social priorities, institutional forces, and dominant worldviews and how alternative traditions challenge those assumptions. Building directly on the Liberation Psychology workshop, this essay asks you to integrate historical analysis, psychological theory, and applied intervention design. Your essay should be organized into three clearly labeled sections: Part I: Situating the Problem Historically Identify a contemporary community issue (U.S. or NYC-based) that you explored during the Liberation Psychology workshop, or a closely related issue you refined afterward. Part II: Liberation Psychology as a Corrective Using Liberation Psychology and at least one additional underrepresented or non-dominant psychological perspective from the course (e.g., Ancient practices, African, Indigenous, African American, Asian, Latine, feminist psychology): Explain how these perspectives challenge mainstream psychological assumptions about your chosen issue. Engage concepts such as structural violence, historical trauma, de-ideologization, community knowledge, or collective well-being. Be explicit about how power, social position, and historical context shape both suffering and psychological knowledge. Part III: Designing a Liberation Informed Intervention and Critically Applying it Design a liberation informed intervention that responds to your chosen issue. You will connect your analysis to both the course and your future engagement with psychology in your careers. Describe the intervention's goals, structure, and intended outcomes. Explain how it centers community knowledge and avoids individual blame models. Explicitly connect your work to a real world professional context. Identify an existing organization, institutional setting, or professional role (e.g., community mental health organization, school system, policy group, nonprofit, research lab, clinical or applied setting) in which you could imagine engaging with this issue. Explain how the ideas developed in this paper could produce tangible value beyond this course-for example, by shaping professional practice, informing policy, guiding community collaboration, or reframing how psychological knowledge is used.
