Women's equality in the workplace is a cause that is extremely important to me. Women have historically been discriminated against, and while treatment has improved, women are generally still in lower-paying positions and are less valued for their work. As a woman preparing to enter a male-dominated field, I know I'll likely face both subtle and blatant forms of unequal treatment, along with deeper, systemic discrimination that can't always be seen. The inequality in this cause is the unequal treatment, compensation, and value of women in the workforce, especially in male-dominated fields. Women, as well as any gender identity that does not present as a straight man, are affected by workplace discrimination, including lower incomes, being ignored, and unequal opportunities for professional and economic success. In order to make a difference, social norms need to change even more than they have. Although society has made progress in promoting gender equality, many outdated ideas still persist, especially when it comes to how women are viewed in the workplace. Women are still looked at as inferior in masculine tasks, like leadership, and are often seen as for only their femininity and caretaking. As a result, women often have to work harder just to be taken seriously or seen as equally competent. On top of that, even though there are already laws meant to protect against workplace discrimination and ensure equal pay, they aren't always enforced consistently or effectively.
