A. Describe the anatomy of a skeletal muscle fiber in detail.
B. Be sure to know the functions of each of the following parts of a NMJ: calcium, voltage gated calcium channels, voltage gated sodium channels, acetylcholinesterase/AChE (enzyme) , ACh receptors, synaptic vesicles, acetylcholine/ACh (a neurotransmitter).
C. Describe all the events that take place during one muscle contraction (sliding filaments) and then the set of events during muscle relaxation. Be sure to include the following in your explanation: t-tubules, myosin, actin, troponin and tropomyosin, active sites, SR, and calcium.
D. What are the causes of muscle fatigue? Explain.
E. List and describe the three major functions of the nervous system. Be able to give an everyday example that includes the three functions.
F. Compare and contrast the CNS and the PNS with respect to form and function.
G. Name and describe the functions of the major divisions within the PNS.
H. Describe the functions of each of the following neuroglia: schwann cells, oligodendrocytes, and astrocytes.
I. Describe the parts of a typical neuron. Describe the function of each part.
J. Describe the three functional categories of neurons.
K. Explain all the steps that take place within a neuron during an action potential. Include the following in your answer: depolarization, repolarization, and return to resting potential.
L. Compare and contrast local (graded) and action potentials.
M. Explain how a message travels across a synapse from one neuron to another. Be sure to mention all the ions and molecules involved.
