Describe how your hypothesis might confirmed or disconfirmed

Problem

In a study reported by Gene Koretz in BusinessWeek (December 9, 2002). nine- and ten-year-old boys and girls ran a short race. There was no significant difference in the average speeds of the children when they ran solo, but when they ran the race again, paired with another child, the boys' speeds, but not the girls', increased. The boys' speeds increased most when they were paired on the second trial with a girl. In a brief essay offer a hypothesis to explain this result, and describe how your hypothesis might be (partially) confirmed or disconfirmed. What is the hypothesis? Could it be confirmed or disconfirmed?
