Organizational Design Project Description

(Railroad Maintenance Facility)

The National Railroad owns and operates 1500 diesel-electric engines. Each of the engines is serviced and maintained at one of five service/repair facilities scattered throughout the country. Three hundred (300) engines are assigned to each facility. Each facility is staffed by 150 employees that have responsibility for maintaining and repairing their assigned engines at the lowest possible cost. By federal law, they are required to perform maintenance checks on all safety related equipment every 90 days. In addition, the regularly service the engines (ranging from an "oil and lube" to a complete disassembly and rebuild of each of the major engine components) at specific mileage intervals and retrieve and repair any engines that break down while in service. The 150 employees at each of the service repair facilities perform the following functions. You are dealing with one of these facilities. There are ranges in the functions below. Some employees may (or may not) perform more than one function.

Machinist (37% - 43%) - Maintain and repair the diesel engines and other mechanical parts (e.g., wheels, axles, etc.) of the engines.

Electrician (18% - 24%) - Maintain and repair the electrical motors and electrical transmission lines and equipment on the engines.

Pipefitter (9% - 14%) - Maintain and repair the framework of pipes and tubes that transport fluids (e.g., coolants, lubricants, etc.) to the

locations where they are needed.

Boilermaker (7% - 9%) - Maintain and repair the thick sheet metal parts that cover and protect the working parts of the engines.

Laborer (6% - 9%) - Wash; move engines; do detail work in engine cabs (seats, windows, etc.); paint exterior surfaces as needed.

Quality Control Inspector (5% - 7%) - Check the work of each of the functions and track down sources of any errors that are identified during inspections.

Supervisor (8% - 10%) - Maintain an overall work schedule; make work assignments; monitor the overall progress of the work and make adjustments and reassignments as needed.
