Describe the perspective views of medicalization

Problem:

Medicalization is the process through which behaviors or conditions were once viewed as moral, social, or personal issues that become defined and treated as medical problems. Sociologists described the two main perspectives on the outcomes of medicalization.

First, the perspective views medicalization as largely positive. Through this standpoint, identifying or "naming" a behavior as an illness improves the quality of care and access to treatments. Once the condition is medically recognized, it often becomes a focus of scientific research, formal diagnosis, or professional intervention. This also becomes covered by insurance and supported by clinical guidelines. An example, when mental health conditions are understood as illnesses rather than character flaws, individuals receive a greater empathy and structured support. Some sense, medicalization can legitimize a suffering and promote more effective treatments.

Second, the perspective can be more critical. Influenced by scholars such as Michel Foucault, his view argues that medicalization can function as a form of social control. Defining certain behaviors such as illnesses, society may pathologize the normal differences or socially undesirable actions. Once labeled as "sick," individuals can experience stigma, discrimination, or loss of autonomy. Critics will also argue that medicalization can shift the attention away from broader social or structural causes, such as the inequality or environmental stress, and instead focus on the individual treatment.

Finally, naming a behavior as a sickness doesn't automatically lead to either improved treatment or inevitable stigmatization. But it can produce both effects at the same time. Medicalization can increase access to care and reduce moral blame but also reinforcing labels and expanding institutional oversight. The impact depends largely on social context, cultural attitudes, and how the medical label is applied.  Reply to this discussion for me. Need Assignment Help?
