Background Information

Both Functionalists and Conflict Theorists focus on the importance of an individual's economic background to explain their theoretical perspectives about education and inequality. Both Functionalists and Conflict Theorists agree that societal norms about success influence how education is organized in the United States. Both also agree that the economic background of students influences students' experiences in classrooms and their overall school achievement. However, Functionalists and Conflict Theorists disagree on the reasons why inequality exists in society and in education.

Readings/ Sources

In a reading by Kathleen Wilcox, Differential Socialization in the Classroom: Implications for Equal Opportunity, Wilcox describes her research on Smith Elementary School and Huntington Elementary School. Using a classroom in each school, Wilcox tests out many of the Functionalists' and Conflict Theorists' ideas about the purpose of education and inequality in society. Wilcox's research showed that the students at Smith Elementary and at Huntington Elementary had very different experiences. Using data from one classroom in each school, Wilcox showed examples of these differences in her analyses of the classroom environments, one example from the curriculum, and the roles of the Smith teacher and Huntington teacher.

In another reading from Annette Lareau, The Hectic Pace of Concerted Cultivation:

Garrett Tallinger, Lareau tells the story of a child from a middle-class family, Garrett, to describe the child-rearing pattern of "concerted cultivation." For a 10-year-old, Garrett has a very hectic life. While he is busy maintaining his high grades in school during the day, after school and on the weekends, he is juggling multiple extracurricular activities.

Also, by Annette Lareau, A Child' s Pace: Tyrec Taylor, focuses on a child from a working-class family, Tyrec, who was raised through the child-rearing approach of "accomplishment of natural growth." Tyrec is a cheerful 9-year-old who enjoys hanging out with his family and neighborhood friends after school and on the weekends. Living with a single-mom, Tyrec's family is not able to pay for after school activities.

Prompt
