The concept I found the most interesting this week was Erik Erikson's stage 4 industry vs. inferiority. Erikson found the greatest source of personality development from social relationships. During this stage, a sense of competence is formed by learning new skills, completing tasks, and receiving encouragement from parents, teachers, and peers. I found this theory interesting because it explains how success and positive reinforcement benefit children by building confidence. Repeated failure or criticism can lead to feelings of inferiority. It shows how important it is for adults to create supportive environments where children can develop confidence in their abilities. Children in middle childhood are constantly busy planning and playing. During this very active time it is important to feel confident in their endeavors to get a sense of future challenges. If at that time the child feels lesser then peers, self doubt will form. This inferiority complex can last all the way into adulthood. This does not mean children must feel they excel at everything but rather believe they are competent and valued in some areas. For example, a child who struggles academically but excels in athletics can still develop a strong sense of competence because they are still recognized and valued. In contrast, a child who earns excellent grades but receives criticism for small mistakes may begin to develop a lower self confidence.
