The construct that I selected is emotional regulation. This construct refers to a person's ability to understand, manage, and handle emotional experiences appropriately in their everyday life. This construct is important because people are completely different in how well they can calm themselves, tolerate distress, and avoid reacting impulsively when emotions become intense.
To assess the construct validity of a measure of emotional regulation, I would first make sure the test items clearly reflect the construct. For example, items should focus on skills such as managing anger, calming anxiety, tolerating frustration, and thinking before reacting. According to the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing, validity refers to the degree to which evidence and theory support the interpretation of test scores for a specific purpose (AERA et al., 2014). Therefore, I would need to gather evidence that scores from the measure actually reflect emotional regulation.
One way to assess construct validity would be to examine whether scores relate to other variables in expected ways. For example, emotional regulation scores should correlate positively with coping skills and psychological well-being. They should also correlate negatively with impulsivity, emotional distress, and difficulty managing relationships. This would support the idea that the measure is capturing the intended construct. I would also examine whether the measure is different from related but separate constructs, such as general intelligence or personality. This is important because construct validity develops through multiple sources of evidence over time (Anastasi & Urbina, 1997; Anastasi, 1986).
Reliability also affects validity. If a measure of emotional regulation produces inconsistent scores, then its validity would be limited because the scores would contain too much measurement error.
