Describe social identity theory

Problem 1: Describe social identity theory. Consider what the theory says regarding categorization, ingroup, outgroups, how we maintain self-esteem through groups, and how our group membership influences our beliefs, behaviors, and values.

Problem 2: Describe the two groups that you are a member of. How did you become a member of these groups? Describe how important these two groups are to you. How much are these two groups a part of your identity?

Problem 3: For each group, describe the group norms and values that are associated with that group. How does the group expect you to behave? How does your identification with each group influence your personal values and beliefs. Do you ever find that the beliefs and values you associate with your group are different from your personal values and beliefs?

Problem 4: What are the out-groups associated with each of the two in-groups you listed. Try and think about specific out groups (Exp: if you indentify with your family the comparison group would be other families not people without families) How does your identity as a member of each in-group change your perceptions of the outgroup members? Do you think your group is better? Make sure to apply the theory to your thinking.

Problem 5: Are the beliefs and values you associate with being a member of each in-group in conflict with each other? Or are they complementary? Think about the values and norms you listed, are they completely in agreement? How do you deal with conflict (not conflict within the group) in the expectations or beliefs associated with the two in-group memberships you listed?
