Describe - ledoux duel pathway model of fear

Problem:

After reading LeDoux Dual Pathway Model of Fear by JeanMarie Bianchi from below, from the perspective of a future licensed professional counselor, briefly describe what the low-road and high-road mean and why it might be important for clients to understand these pathways.  In other words, how could this information be used in a therapeutic manner to help clients? LeDoux Duel Pathway Model of Fear by JeanMarie Bianchi

Joe LeDoux posits a two-pathway or dual pathway of fear and he basically argues that there are two different pathways trained by which emotions can be processed. He calls these two pathways the Low Road and the High Road. For example, here's a girl on the trail, and she sees a snake. First, visual information comes in through the eye, and it goes directly to the amygdala. The amygdala is critical for emotional responses. This information is processed immediately in the thalamus and the amygdala, which permits an immediate behavioral reaction such as an increase in heart rate, an increase in blood pressure, and muscles contracting. All of these are useful for mobilizing us to respond and avoid the threat. This is the low road bypassing the cortex. It's quick, it's emotional, and it permits a fast adaptive response to the situation.

The higher road leads to the cerebral cortex, where the message can be interpreted more carefully and more in depth. We're able to more carefully evaluate what's going on. The idea is that it's adaptive information to come in and basically be processed immediately and quickly from a standpoint survival and then later on process it more cognitively up in the cerebral cortex. This is  Joe LeDoux's model, this two-road or dual theory model of how the brain processes emotion and he is a famous emotion researcher. This was a major prominent model that came out in the early 2000s about how the brain deals with emotional events.

The model described in the video, known as the Dual Pathway Model of Fear (or the "Low Road" and "High Road" theory), is a foundational concept in neuroscience developed by the American neuroscientist Joseph LeDoux.

***While this is an educational summary by JeanMarie Bianchi and does not serve as a primary academic source, the scientific model itself is primarily attributed to LeDoux's extensive body of research, most notably his influential 1996 book and subsequent academic papers.
