I. Examine and discuss the life and work of John Augustus. Why is he important to probation/parole officers today? What did he do that still has significance?
II. Discuss the strain/anomie theories proposed by Robert Merton and examine the importance of the responses he discusses.
III. What are the discussed pros/cons or benefits and drawbacks discussed with intensive supervision methods? Give an example of one of these methods or technologies you think are appropriate and good for probation/parole, and another that reflects a practice you'd like to stop.
IV. Describe and discuss the Presentence Investigation Report (PSI). Who completes it, who is it used by, what does it review, and why is it important?
