An important socialization agent is the first school years for a child. "Most U.S. children spend about seven hours a day, 180 days a year, in school, which makes it hard to deny the importance school has on their socialization (U.S. Department of Education 2004)." If we really think about that, kids are spending more hours awake at school than they are at home.
Sending your kids to school in the early years is some of the most influential times of their lives, in my opinion. Teaching them teamwork, following a schedule and learning to take instructions from someone other than their parents. Regiment with time for playing & interacting with others is a great way to socialize kids at a young age. I do think that children who do not attend daycare or 4k prior to entering kindergarten are at a disadvantage. Daycare or 4k gives kids a chance to experience school with more time for play. Kids that do not, may be slower to become social, especially those that are an only child. I know that daycare & 4k have personally impacted my son.
