Most of you are aware of the phenomenon of motorists who intentionally break traffic laws on Texas highways. Take the infraction of speeding as an example. Referring to the 5 neutralization techniques presented in Ch. 17 of your reader, express 4 of them by hypothetical responses from speeders. For example, you could write the following:
1. Denial of Responsibility: "Everyone was speeding. I was just moving with the traffic so that I wouldn't get run over!"
2. Denial of _____ (etc.) . . .
Do not use the Denial of Responsiblity that I used as an example, but use the remaining four neutralizations. If possible, include some statements from motorists that you've actually heard.
In closing, discuss why some motorists offer explanations while others might not.
Denial of injury - accused states that his actions didn't harm anyone or anything. If caught speeding at 2 in the morning for example a speeder might say, "Come on officer, there is no one on the road at this time of the night. I was not endangering anyone else or myself by doing 70 in a 55 mph speed limit on an open country road."
