Define the writers primarily by their race

Problem

We are examining works by a group of African-American writers, all of whom take racial identity and conflict as at least part of their subject in their writing. Do you think we do these writers a disservice by grouping them together in this way? Is it reductive to define these writers primarily by their race, even if this also shapes the writing they do? If you were designing a course like this, would you group these writers together or handle them differently?
