Your assignment is to write a comprehensive research paper presenting a support (pro) or against (cons) Americans buying only or mainly “made in America” products, and the impact of this decision on American and global economy.

Points to consider in your write-up:

1. What is the perceived advantage or disadvantage (if any) of the achieving this notion?

a. Giving the present globalization is the notion of Americans buying mainly or only made in America product an illusion or could it be achieved?

b. What impact would the achievement of the above have on America’s economy? How would the rest of the world react to American made products?

c. What effect will this have on consumer choice? Vis-à-vis availability of variety of products and services, maximizing consumers’ welfare, etc.? ECON 10100-03/Fall 2016/CGO Page 2 of 3

d. What effect(s), if any, does consumer choice play in the quest for made in America products?

e. Can cost of labor help or affect America’s ability to achieve this “dream” of made in America products?

f. Can top management compensation help or affect America’s ability to achieve this “dream” of made in America products? What about personal or corporate taxes? How would they impact on this?

g. What policy advice would you suggest to improve or achieve the situation, or otherwise?

Guidelines:

1. You are expected to show a clear and very lucid understanding of the concepts studied in this class by using relevant terminologies and examples in your write-up and presentation.

2. You are expected to demonstrate and use extra research from other sources other than your textbook and class lecture. Your term paper must have at least a minimum of four in-text citations.

Three of the required in-text citations must NOT include your textbook; in other words show good use of external research. You must also have a work-cited page different from main work.

3. The use of data, graphs, tables, and figures from your research will be highly favored in grading. - It would be to your advantage to prove your understanding of the concepts of economics by applying such terms and concepts in your paper and presentation.

ECON 10100-03/Fall 2016/CGO Page 3 of 3 Specific instructions regarding mechanics of writing:

Your research paper must be in ONE MS Word file or Rich Text File (RTF). Use ONLY the APA academic writing style. Please go to your class’ Blackboard “Resource” folder for the link to Purdue University’s Online Writing Lab (OWL) resource in case of doubt of what constitutes APA writing standard.

Your research paper should NOT be more than five thousand (5,000) words long (excluding title, and work cited pages), and no less than one thousand, five hundred (1,500) words long.

Use ONLY Times New Roman font type and font size 12, line spacing is 2.0 (double spacing). Writing less than the required 1,500 words will cause you to lose points, just as writing beyond the required maximum of 5,000 words will also cause you to lose points

Just to avoid confusion, the topic of the paper once more is: “A Case for Made in America Products: Pros or Cons”. This means you are to write a research (not just sentiments and personal opinion) based paper in support or against the above assertion.

In essence, this is an argumentative paper and you are expected to use the principles and concepts you have learned in this course (ECONONICS) to defend your position. There are three parts to this argumentative paper;

One - present the views of those who support buying made-in-USA goods.

Second - present the views of those who do not support the idea.

Thirdly - what are your own views on the issue – where do you stand? It is also a good idea to start by exploring or explaining what the departments of commerce/trade defines as a "made in America" product.

This paper requires extensive research, as well as a good understanding of the forces of demand supply and how they shape the macroeconomy.

It involves the understanding of the forces of globalization, the interconnectedness of the world economy and how these impact wages and the labor market. This is an objective economic argument that does not call for just sentiments.
