One of the challenges we face as counselors is understanding that there are many causes to the issues that our clients present. Given the complexity and unique characteristics of each client, we know that it is impossible to have a single theory or approach that explains all human behavior. Likewise, as you read through the various etiological models or explanations of addiction, the tendency is to ask "Which one is the correct model that explains what is causing addiction?". The answer is not so simple.
If you were to create your own model that explains addiction, what would it include and why? You can include a variety of aspects from the models of addiction that you have read about but your own model of addiction should be unique.
