Building Emotional Connection: Empathy, Attunement, and Relationship Repair
All children need attunement from safe parents. This is the secure base from which children can safely explore the world, returning to it as needed. When a parent is experiencing empathy, he will attune to his child. Emotions might be different-a child is upset, a parent is soothing-but affect will be matched. Affect is the nonverbal or bodily expression of emotion. When the parent is sensitive to the child's emotion, experiences empathy for the child, and matches the affective expression of that emotion, the child is likely to feel understood and become less upset and more regulated. This is attunement; the sharing of affect within the deepening intersubjective connection. This moves away from defensive responding toward an open and engaged stance within which experience can be made sense of. Need Assignment Help?
