Overview:

The goal of crime scene documentation is to create a visual record that will allow the forensics lab and the prosecuting attorney to easily recreate an accurate view of thescene. In this assignment, you will create a mock crime scene and document it with photography and notes.

Instructions:

• Download the Crime Scene Documentation template.

• Create a mock crime scene using items around the house. The type of crime is your choice.

o Place at least three items of evidence in the crime scene.

• Document the crime scene. Keep in mind that crime scene documentation is an important part of building the case and an integral part of the investigation, and without these methods the findings of the investigation could come into question.

Think about what is expected to be done when taking notes and photographing the evidence and that the documentation is important.

o Take a minimum of 10 photographs of the scene, including:

  • 7 overall photos of the crime scene
  • For each piece of evidence, take the following photos:

• 1 medium range

• 1 close range without scale

• 1 close range with scale

  • Take notes as to the time/date that the crime scene occurred, any details of the crime that you note from the scene, and information on each item of evidence collected. This should be roughly a half page of notes about the crime scene.
  • Fill out the required information in the Request for Examination of Physical Evidence:

• Basic information, including Agency Case #, Incident Town,

Incident Date, Incident Type.

• Summary of the case.
