Task Overview

Create a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet to conduct and present a ratio analysis of Rio Tinto (RIO). Follow the embedded example of Ratio Analysis completed on Caltex vs Shell

The analysis is to include the calculation and presentation of ratios for liquidity, activity, debt, profitability, market value and competitor (BHP Billiton). The ratio analysis is to show:

  • Values for each ratio for three years
  • Trend analysis graphs
  • Peer group analysis graphs

Requirements -

Create a single MS Excel file to perform a ratio analysis using the latest three years of complete financial statement data.

a. Include company name and address

b. List the financial statements and other information that were used in the calculation of the ratios

c. Do not type the answers in the cell.

d. Each number used in the ratio calculation should be able to be traced back to the financial statements present in the same worksheet using 'Trace Precedents' button.

Perform a ratio analysis (showing all calculations) on all groups of ratios as attached in the embedded material below:

a. Liquidity ratios

b. Activity ratios

c. Debt ratios

d. Profitability ratios

e. Market value ratios

Show the following:

a. The values for each ratio for three years.

b. The trend analysis graphs: For each ratio, provide a graph showing the three year performance of your company.

c. Peer group analysis graphs: For each ratio, provide a graph showing the three year performance of Rio Tinto's ratio against the major competitor - BHP Billiton.
