Write a narrative that uses humor to entertain the reader. Your narrative can be a scene from a larger (imagined) story, or it can have a complete plot. It can also be about something that happened in real life or something completely fictional. Make full use of narrative techniques, such as dialogue and irony, and bring the narrative to life using imagery.
How you go about this project is up to you, but consider one of the following options:
• Option I: Write a work of humorous flash fiction (about 1,000 words) that tells a complete story. Include at least one character, a distinct point of view, a source of conflict, and enough sensory detail to bring the setting to life. Use other narrative techniques, such as irony and understatement, to further the plot or make a specific impression on the reader.
• Option II: Write a funny skit or scene in an imaginary play, movie, television show, or web series. Besides dialogue between characters, include detailed descriptions of the set and stage directions to communicate the specific impression you want the imaginary director to convey. Create a cast list with short bios of each character. Your instructor may allow you to work in a group to perform the scene or record it.
• Option III: Create a portion of a comic book script that focuses on a humorous scene. Use rich detail and imagery in your writing to describe each panel so that an artist can easily recreate what you envision. Use literary techniques appropriate for a comic book script to create a distinct impression and bring the part of the narrative you work on to a conclusion or satisfying outcome.
If none of the options described appeal to you, feel free to take a custom approach as you fulfill all the requirements of the assignment. You are free to work individually or in a group, depending on your classroom situation and your instructor's preferences.
