This poem was not written for a special person, this poem was created for women. Describing the "perfect" woman, Angelou wrote about herself. It was a great way to say: "All of us are perfect." Every woman is individual and very special. The woman does not have to be a model or super hero. The modern woman is great and does not need any changes or special secrets. The woman can be a phenomenon if she is brave and has confidence. In the poem "Phenomenal woman," Maya Angelou described her perception of what it means to be a woman:
I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I'm telling lies.
Many people may think that women are all about pretty outfits, make up, and manners. According to Maya, the woman needs to be strong and powerful:
It's in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.
The woman does not need to have a beautiful face and body to be a "phenomenal woman." It is all about her spirit. The author claims that it is a big pride to be a woman. She started her poem with a confession of not having a secret to be so special. She was not a model and her secret was inside her. Her charm, grace, and spirit helped her to be exceptional and stand out of a crowd. When she walked in a room she was surrounded by many men and she had everyone's attention. Everyone was looking at her. In this poem, Maya Angelou stated:
It's the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
The reader can see how great and charming this woman was. Maya Angelou was trying to show her "inner mystery" that was nothing notable but her. The main persona had her natural personality and she was very proud of it.
Maya asserted that to be a phenomenal woman means to be very self-reliant and imperturbable woman. The woman has to love and respect herself. The woman is not about high fashion, shopping, cooking, and taking care of her daily chores; the woman is about magnetism and charisma. Maya knew that many people loved her and were inspired by her. In this poem Maya was describing herself. The typical standards of beauty can not be applied to her.
This poem has four stanzas. It is very easy to read and understand. Maya Angelou described herself as the "Phenomenal woman" by using repetition at the end of each stanza. She pointed out her style, grace, and manners. There are many symbols as well. In the poem "Phenomenal woman" Maya describe how men were acted when she walked in a room:
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
When people say "phenomenal women" they may think about tall, slim, blonde lady, with a perfect smile and hair. The image of phenomenal woman does not have to be the same. The woman should be open-mined, ambitious, and have a pride. This is the image of "phenomenal woman" in the Maya's perception.
The author was trying to show her audience several things such as how important and hard to be a woman and how many things woman needs to sacrifice to be the perfect one. In a real life, the modern society prefers to use stereotypes everywhere. People need to have a big house, white fence, green lawn, perfect looking spouse, smart children, and pet. Person will be considered as a successful if she or he has a well paid job, slim body, and beautiful face. Sometimes women forced to do many things which they do not need to do sometimes. The woman is prefect the way she is.
Finally, it can be concluded that the poem "Phenomenal woman" by Maya Angelou has a great meaning, very easy to understand, and special theme. The author did a great job by inspiring and supporting many women in the world.
