Assignment Guidelines:
Shipler brings up several topics that relate to poverty in America(immigration,sweat shopts, sexual abuse, education, personal responsibility, money management,working conditions,etc.) so please cover more than just a single chapter during the course of this paper. The goal is to interpret the author’s point of view, the author’s argument and reasoning, the author’s rhetorical strategies, and so on…in relation to poverty in America. Essentially, your paper should be emphasizing what you think the author means. How does he use his language? What audience is Shipler talking to? What is the context of the debate? How do the case studies affect the reader? An analysis should not agree or disagree with the author;however, an analysis can make suggestions and implications based on the language of the text.
A total of three sources must be cited in the analysis so the works cited page should have three sources listed. Mindfully use these direct quotations as this is only a 750 word paper. The quotes should not be the primary focus of the paragraphs;in fact, they should only be utilized to support the thesis and topic sentences of each paragraph.
