Compute scores to obtain a total index of life stress

Project description:

Application: Working with SPSS (PASW) Software

INSTRUCTIONS: Write a paper covering answers to assigned problems in Lessons 22 & 23

Lessons: Problems 1-4 & Lesson 23 Problems 1-5

Paper should be written using APA6th edition guidelines. A sample paper on page 41 of the Publication Manual which you may use as a reference. Your paper must meet the following requirements:

1. Include explanation and justification of all answers.

2. Include APA Results section for each problem set

3. Include presentation, discussion and explanation of all figures and tables

4. Include only critical elements of your SPSS output

5. Include a properly formatted H10(null) and H1a (alternative hypotheses which cover all possible situations related to the problem

6. Include an examination of statistical testing to the null using the statement “fail to reject” or “accept “( Notice the language is always related to the null hypotheses)

7. Include not only the results of the testing, but the steps you took to conduct to test via SPSS. Additionally you must provide a table to demonstrate that portion of the assignment.

The data for Exercises 1 through 4 are in the data set named Lesson 22 Exercise File 1 on the web https://www.pearsonhighered.com/greensalkindSPSS. The data are from the following research problem :

John is interested in determining if a new teaching method, the Involvement Technique, is effective in teaching algebra to first graders. John randomly samples six first graders from all first graders within the Lawrence City School System and individually teaches them algebra with the new method. Next, the pupils complete an eight-term algebra test. Each item describes a problem and presents four possible answers to the problem. The scores on each are 1 or 0, where 1 indicates a correct response and 0 indicates a wrong response, The SPSS data file contains 6 cases, each with eight-item scores on the algebra test,

1.Compute total scores for the algebra test from the item scores. A one-sample t test will be computed on the total scores.

2.What is the test value for this problem?

3.Conduct a one-sample t test on the total scores. On the output, identify the following:

a. Mean algebra score
b. t test value
c. p value

4. Given the results of the children’s performance on the test, what should John conclude? Write a Results section based on your analyses.

The data for Exercises 1 through 5 are in the data set named Lesson 23 Exercise File 1 on the web https://www.pearsonhighered.com/greensalkindSPSS. The data are from the following research problem :

Mike, a developmental psychologist, wants to know if overall life stress increases or decreases as working women grow older. He obtains scores on the ILS (Index of Life Stress) from a group of 100 working women when they are 40 years of age. He is able to obtain a second ILS from 45 of these women at age 60 to assess whether they felt significantly more or less stress as they grew older. the ILS consists of two scores, interpersonal life stress and occupational life stress. The two scores combine to form an index of overall life stress. The SPSS data file contains 45 cases one for each woman, and four variables, their interpersonal and occupational life stress at age 40 and their interpersonal and occupational life stress at age 60.

1. Compute scores to obtain a total Index of Life Stress (ILS) at age 40& 60

2. Compute a paired-samples t test to determine if overall life stress, on average, increases or decreases with age in the population.

3. Create a difference variable to show the changes in life stress from 40 years of age to 60 years of age for each woman. Create a histogram to show these changes graphically.

4. Mike decides than an overall ILS does not adequately reflect changes in women’s life stress over time. He hypothesizes that occupational stress probably declines as women get older, while interpersonal life stress may increase or stay the same. Conduct paired-samples t tests to evaluate the hypotheses.

5. Write a results section based on your analyses in Exercises 1-4. be sure to include graphical and statistical descriptions in your results.
