The degree of expression adds another dimension to the issue, as it goes beyond just physical abuse, as it can be emotional, psychological, or sexual force. Isolation is also another form, as it controls what a victim is "allowed" to do with their lives. Economic abuse and using privilege are also seen as abuse (SAMHSA, 2012). Over time, abusers tend to escalate their level of aggression, heightening the level of violence. This escalation is also parallel to the nature of substance abuse, further increasing the complexity of domestic violence. The link between the two is not exactly simple, either, because there are those who do not abuse alcohol or drugs and still commit domestic violence.
