Compare and contrast passages from both Dawn (Elie Wiesel) and Men in the Sun (Ghassan Kanafani)
Paper instructions:
1) In a 3-4 page essay, compare and contrast passages from both Dawn and Men in the Sun that illustrate how trauma affects the characters. What was the trauma? What life-changing decisions do the characters make? You might want to consider the connection between trauma and one of the following: hope/hopelessness, identity, living in exile, nationalism, or family. Both novellas use flashbacks; these might be useful scenes in the comparison. Focus on a couple of passages from each novella rather than attempting to summarize the entire books. In Men in the Sun you should concentrate on only one character.
Use direct quotes from both texts. Use MLA documentation style, which includes both in-text citations and a Works Cited page. The essay must include a title, an introduction with a thesis statement, supporting evidence from the reading, and a conclusion.
Do not use the first-person “I” point of view.
The essay should be typed, double-spaced, in 12 point Times Roman font, with numbered pages, 1 inch margins all around, in black ink, and on white paper.
