Compare and contrast gender roles in the old country versus

Project - ¡Yo! - Topic and Thesis

TOPIC

Compare and contrast gender roles in the "old country" (the Dominican Republic) versus the United States. There are some pretty significant role differences between the Dominican Republic and the United States during the 1950's and even more so in today's society as there has been a transition of roles in the U.S. in the decades since. Alvarez explained that Dominican women are out casted & regularly discriminated on the basis of a societal norm which is not only done within society but also politically rather than women in the United States.

THESIS STATEMENT
Gender role differences between the United States and the Dominican Republic are significant and those who immigrate to the states are, more often times than not eager to change up their roles. The traditional Dominican family tends to be patriarchal, the male is the head of the household and exercises control over the household budgets and they have final authority over family members and their decisions. The Dominican women in households are responsible for domestic tasks and maintenance whereas those gender role lines in the United States have been blurred and women don't have a specific role in society.
