While I believe it is essential to strive toward being genuine, accepting, and empathic with all clients, I also recognize that this is an ongoing developmental process rather than a constant state of perfection. In person-centered therapy, these core conditions congruence, unconditional positive regard, and empathy are foundational to fostering client growth and therapeutic change (Murdock, 2025). As counselors, we are called to consistently cultivate these qualities, even when it requires intentional effort.
There are certain client presentations that may challenge me, particularly individuals who engage in behaviors that harm others, such as abuse or exploitation. These situations can evoke strong emotional responses, making it more difficult to immediately experience unconditional positive regard. However, I believe it is critical to separate the individual from their behavior and remain grounded in the belief that each person has inherent worth and the capacity for change.
When I find it difficult to fully embody these conditions, I would engage in self-reflection, seek supervision, and remain mindful of my own biases and emotional responses. Additionally, I would lean into my faith, allowing a Christ-centered perspective to guide me in extending grace and compassion. By focusing on the client's underlying pain and maintaining professional boundaries, I can continue to offer a genuine, empathic presence that supports healing and growth. Need Assignment Help?
