Briefly define the nonverbal channel

Problem

• Part I: Both the readings and lecture mention the famous saying that we cannot not communicate. What does this mean? Is it possible to not communicate? Hint: Think about a time when someone responded to a nonverbal signal that you did not intend to send. What was your reaction?

• Part II: Thinking about the different channels of nonverbal communication, IF we could not communicate, what would that look like? Specifically, pick two nonverbal channels. Start by (i) briefly define the nonverbal channel, (ii) describe how closely we could get to not communicating with that type of nonverbal channel, and (iii) when trying to not communicate with that signal or channel, how might those actions be misinterpreted? For example, if you want to talk about gaze, (i) define gaze, (ii) describe whether/how we can control gaze in a way to not communicate, and (iii) how could our control of gaze in a way to not communicate be misinterpreted to mean something else?
