Problem:
One important responsibility in healthcare is balancing technical skills with compassion and good bedside manners. I do not believe advances in technology or strong technical performance should replace the personal and compassionate side of patient care. Patients still need kindness, reassurance, and personal interaction during difficult moments in their lives. Technical skills and compassion should work together to provide quality patient care.
As a daughter caring for a parent living with scleroderma throughout the years, I have seen how important compassion and bedside manners truly are in healthcare. Watching my mother go through appointments and treatments showed me the difference personal interaction can make. Some doctors and nurses took time to listen, speak directly with her and make her feel calm and respected. Other times, I felt healthcare providers focused more on screens and virtual communication than on her as a patient. Although technology has been very useful, my mother often felt more comfortable when doctors and nurses personally spoke with her.
Cross and McWay (2023) explain that communication and patient-centered care are important parts of healthcare. AI also is impacting healthcare today by helping organize patient records, review imaging scans, and assist healthcare providers in decision-making. Once emerging use of AI is remote patient monitoring for elderly patients who live along. While AI can improve efficiency and monitory, healthcare can become less personal if providers rely too heavily on technology instead6 of patient interaction.
