The people of Athens had developed the system of democracy. Each and every Athenian male becomes a citizen, if his parents were Athenians. Women usually were not given citizenship however there were some exceptions throughout the later Hellenistic period. Athenian citizens had as well certain privileges and rights similar to owning land, slaves, membership in the assembly and so on.
