Assessment-diagnosis with clients from minority populations

Problem: A culturally competent counselor must approach assessment and diagnosis with clients from minority populations by considering the client's cultural background, worldview, and lived experiences. Culture influences how distress is expressed, understood, and communicated. The DSM-5-TR recommends using the Cultural Formulation Interview (CFI) to help counselors understand the client's cultural identity, stressors, supports, and personal meaning of symptoms (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2022). This process helps prevent misdiagnosis and ensures symptoms are interpreted within the appropriate cultural context rather than solely through Western diagnostic standards. The DSM-5-TR also highlights cultural concepts of distress, including cultural syndromes such as ataque de nervios, which involves intense emotional and physical reactions commonly, reported in Latin American populations.
