Applying theory-research to a realistic teaching situation

Assignment: Instructional Design Case Study and Application Plan

Purpose:

The purpose of this assignment is to apply instructional theory and research to a realistic teaching situation. You will analyze a classroom case, identify student needs, select appropriate instructional models or strategies, and design an instructional plan that responds to those needs.

This assignment emphasizes the movement from research-based instructional decision-making to practical classroom design. Need Assignment Help?

Final Product:

Submit an Instructional Design Case Study and Application Plan.

The final product should be approximately 6-8 pages, not including references or appendices.

You may also include lesson materials, handouts, technology screenshots, assessment tools, or other instructional resources as appendices.

Required Sections:

1. Classroom Case Description:

Develop or select a realistic instructional scenario.

Your case should include:

Grade level or course7th grade

Subject area: Intensive Reading

Learning goal or unit topic: Identify the central Idea

Description of the student population: Ese students with accommodations and lowest 25%

Student strengths and needs

Instructional challenge or problem of practice

The case should include some complexity. For example, students may vary in reading level, language background, motivation, prior knowledge, disability status, cultural background, access to technology, or confidence with the content.

2. Analysis of Student and Instructional Needs

Analyze the case using concepts from the course.

Address:

What do students need in order to succeed?

What psychological factors may influence learning?

What socio-cultural factors may influence instruction?

What prior knowledge or misconceptions may shape student understanding?

What barriers to learning should the teacher anticipate?

3. Instructional Model Comparison

Select two instructional models, strategies, or techniques that could be used in this case. The constructivist approach and differentiated Instruction please use these two models

For each one, explain:

How the model or strategy works

Why it may be appropriate for the scenario

What research or theory supports it

What limitations or challenges may arise

Then identify which model, strategy, or combination of strategies you would use and explain your rationale.

4. Instructional Application Plan

Design a practical instructional plan that responds to the case.

Your plan should include:

Learning objective

Instructional model or strategy selected

Step-by-step instructional sequence

Teacher actions

Student actions

Opportunities for student engagement, discussion, collaboration, inquiry, or practice

Scaffolds or supports for diverse learners

Assessment or evidence of learning

The plan may represent one detailed lesson or a short instructional sequence across several days.

5. Technology Integration

Explain how technology will be used to support learning.

Your explanation should address:

What technology will be used

How it supports instruction

How it improves access, engagement, feedback, collaboration, differentiation, or achievement

How you will ensure technology use is purposeful and appropriate

6. Reflection on Instructional Decision-Making

Conclude by explaining how your instructional decisions were shaped by theory, research, student needs, and the real-world classroom context.

Note: The constructivist approach to lesson planning and differentiated instruction are the two models used.
