Angiosperms are the flowering plants. They first appeared at least 110 million years ago from the unknown gymnosperm ancestor, these flowering plants have risen to dominance in the majority of the world's floras. The male gametophyte is 2-3 cells limited within the pollen grain; the female gametophyte is generally eight cells contained within an ovule which is retained on sporophyte phase of the plant's life cycle.
