Discussion Questions
1. After reading the poem and watching the "Mr. Tambourine" video, the connection between poetry and music should be abundantly clear. Many people struggle with the elements of poetry and appreciating the genre; however, many of these same people are avid music lovers. Discuss the connection between the two art forms and contemplate why music is so widely embraced, yet many dismiss poetry. You may also discuss your personal experience with music and poetry, if you would like, however discussing personal experiences is optional.
2. Poems are short pieces of writing that pack a lot of punch. Each poem, in a limited number of words, displays a wide range of meaning and interpretation often created through diction, figurative language, sound, and/or structure. Discuss the complexities of this genre by evaluating the elements of poetry associated with the meaning. For instance, what makes a poem meaningful? Is it the structure, language or theme? Is there a common thread between all great works of poetry, or is each a separate powerful entity? Please include specific quotations and passages from your reading to further expand and support your ideas, along with appropriate citations.
