After reading reading chapter ten of Foner, I was surprised to learn that even though slaves were emancipated after the Civil War, they still did not enjoy the same amount of freedom as their white counterparts. During the turbulent period known as Reconstruction, emancipated slaves had to endure much segregation, joblessness, and even eviction.

During Reconstruction, the South was in constant violence. There were many dispites between black and white farmers over land division and land ownership. Many blacks thought that, through their heavy labor before the Civil War, they had a right to claim property. An example can be seen when a group of blacks seized property from a white in 1865 in Tennessee. Similar events took place in other parts of the South. These disputes over land division sometimes sparked brutal skirmishes between whites and blacks.
