The lymphoid system has lymphoid cells (i.e., lymphocytes and plasma cells) and lymphoid organs. Based on various roles they execute, lymphoid organs can be categorized into central (i.e., primary) and peripheral (i.e., secondary) lymphoid organs. The central lymphoid organs are lymphoepithelial structures in which the precursor lymphocytes proliferate, build up and obtain immunological capability. In mammals, the bone marrow, the thymus and the bursa of fabricius in birds symbolize primary lymphoid organs. After getting immune competence, the lymphocytes migrate all along blood and lymph streams, accumulate in the peripheral lymphoid organs and, subsequent antigenic stimulus, and affect the suitable immune response. The spleen, lymph nodes and mucosa–related lymphoid tissue (i.e., MALT) constitute the main peripheral or secondary lymphoid organs. Lymphoidal tissues in the gut (peyer’s patches), tonsils, appendix, salivary glands, tear glands and also the secretion (i.e., colostrums) of the lactating breast of the mother are also involved in the immune system.
