It refers to an eroded region of the tissue lining in the duodenum or stomach. The lining of duodenum or stomach is protected from the effects of HCl by a coating of mucous. When the mucous layer is damaged, the acid might cause inflammation and erosion of the lining. It is termed as peptic ulcer. Ulcer is of two types viz., duodenal and gastric.
