Peptic ulcer:

It refers to an eroded region of the tissue lining in the duodenum or stomach. The lining of duodenum or stomach is protected from the effects of HCl by a coating of mucous.  When the mucous layer is damaged, the acid might cause inflammation and erosion of the lining. It is termed as peptic ulcer. Ulcer is of two types viz., duodenal and gastric. Out of the two, duodenal ulcer is more familiar. It takes place in people in the age group of 25 to 45 years.  Gastric ulcer is more general in persons above the age of 50 years. The Peptic ulcer is very general gastric ailment.

Causes:-

The ulcer is mainly due to infections by a bacterium termed as Helicobacter pylori. It might also be caused due to the uncontrolled usage of aspirin or certain anti-inflammatory drugs like Ibuprofen. Ulcer might also be caused due to alcohol, smoking, caffeine and psychological stress.  In rigorous peptic ulcer, upper digestive tract endoscopy is completed to evaluate the extent of damage. A bleeding or perforated ulcer needs hospitalization. General treatment of ulcer is aimed at remedial the ulcer and preventing its reappearance.  Life style changes like giving up smoking and alcohol might be needed.
