Inspiration is the procedure by which fresh air is drawn into the lungs. It is an active procedure. The muscles contributing in the inspiration procedure are external - intercostals muscles present in among the ribs and the diaphragm.

As an outcome of such muscular movements, the volume of the thoracic cavity is raised.This causes the air pressure inside the lungs to fall underneath the atmospheric pressure. Therefore air (i.e., tidal air) from outside passes via the air passage into the lungs to balance the pressure.
