Inspiration:

Inspiration is the procedure by which fresh air is drawn into the lungs. It is an active procedure. The muscles contributing in the inspiration procedure are external - intercostals muscles present in among the ribs and the diaphragm.

During quiet respiration, the contraction of external intercostal muscle causes the ribs to move interiorly and outwardly. This movement expands the cavity of the thorax by raising it side to side and in dorso-ventral dimensions.

The contraction of radial muscles of the diaphragm leads to the flattening of inelastic, dome shaped central portion of the diaphragm. As an outcome of such muscular movements, the volume of the thoracic cavity is raised.

This causes the air pressure inside the lungs to fall underneath the atmospheric pressure. Therefore air (i.e., tidal air) from outside passes via the air passage into the lungs to balance the pressure.
