Waterfall Model

Introduction to Waterfall Model

Waterfall model is the simplest process model which has dominated software development for a number of years. It is a development process that centres on planned work and is best suited for projects where requirements can be clearly defined. It has been derived to introduce some order of software development activities in the development of large software projects. It groups development activities into independent steps that are carried out in a systematic sequence one after the i.e. they are organized in a linear fashion of consecutive phase. That why it is also called as the linear sequential model. It is the oldest model and a classic life cycle, most widely used as the basis of the other models. Now it has become a little outdated.

The waterfall model is an engineering model, designed to be applied to the development of the software products. The software development starts from the system level and develops step by step through the various   phases. The main criteria behind it are that such steps are too followed consecutively. Each  step is itself made  up of  more detailed activities and produces an  output which  becomes the input of the next  step  and  so on.

The sequence of major performed in a software project is:

Concept formation, developing the software specification, software design coding and unit testing, software integration and testing and, release, implementation and maintenance. These various steps of model are shown in fig 2.4.

2. Development the Software Specification

3. Software Design

4. Coding and Unit Testing

5. Software Integration and Testing

6. Release, Implementation and Maintenance

The waterfall model has played an important role in software development because it has imposed much needed discipline on the software development process. So the software development process should subject to discipline, planning, and management and implementation of the product should be postponed until the objectives are well understood.

Because this model is an ideal model, it can be categorized as linear rigid and monolithic. Linear property is considered as the series of sequential steps. The rigid property considers that the result of each phase is frozen before proceeding to the next phase. The monolithic waterfall model in the sense that all planning is oriented to single delivery date.
