Wasserman has proposed a set of principle  that  might be used to specify and design  data. In various principle for data specification are give below:

1. The systematic analysis principles  applied to function and behaviour should also be   applied to data. For data  designing the data flow  and content should be developed and reviewed, data object should be identified and  alternative data organizations should be considered and effect of data modelling on design should be checked.

2. All data structures and the  operations to be performed on each  should be identified. To achieve this data structures are used which must take the operation to be performed on them.

3. A data dictionary should be established and used to define both data and  program design. We have already discussed the  concept of data dictionary inchapter5. A data dictionary represent  the data  objects their relationship with each  other and constraints  on the elements  of a data  structure.

4. Low  level  data design decisions should be deferred until late in the design process. The concept of stepwise refinement discussed earlier may be used here for design of data. Overall data organization may be defined during  requirements analysis refined during preliminary design  work and specified in detail  during  the detail design step. Top down approach can be  used here.

5. The representation  of data  structure should  be known only to those modules that must make direct use the  data contained within the structure. It basically uses the concepts of information  hiding to perform it

6. A library  of useful data structures and the  operation that may be applied to them  should be developed. Data structures can be designed for reusability to use them in the future projects.

7. A software design and programming  language should support the specification and  realization of abstract data types.

There should exist some  means for direct specification of the software so that the implementation of  a data structure can  be made.

The above described principle form a base for a data  design approach structure  of data  design.

Structure of Data Design

In the structure data design there are basically three levels. So it can  be called as the  3 level data design structure. The various  levels are -The  component  level the application level and the business level.

At the  component level, the data structure and algorithms  are used  for the  development of high  quality application. At the application level  the data  model is converted into the  database to accomplish the business  objectives. Finally at the business level data warehouse is generated in which al the information  stored in database are reorganized. Data warehousing basically enables  data mining or knowledge discovery that may have an affect on the success of the business.
