Object Oriented Design Methods
The first attempts to describe an object oriented design method did not surface until the early 1980, both Abbatt and Booch contended that OOD begins with a natural language( e.g. English ) description of the solution strategy for the software realization of a real world problem. From this description the designer can isolate objects and operations. Later contributions by schlaer and Mellor and coad and yourdon introduced a more comprehensive notation to support this approach and argued that this activity is more properly characterized as analysis.
At their stage of evolution OOD methods combine elements of all three design categories discussed earlier in this book. Data design architectural design and procedural design. By identifying classes and objects data abstractions are created. By coupling operations to data modules are specified and a structure for the software is established.
Early OOD approaches are typified by the following steps.
1. Define the problem.
2. Develop and informal strategy ( processing narrative) for the software realization of the real world problem domain.
3. Formalize the strategy using the following sub steps:
4. Reapply steps 2, 3, and 4 recursively.
It should be noted that all four step ( with possible exception of step 3 are performed during software requirement analysis. Extending these activities into design the following steps are added .
5. Refine the work done during OOA, looking for subclasses, message characteristics and other elaboration of detail.
6. Represent the data structure associated with objects attributes.
7. Represent the procedural detail associated with such operation.
