Introduction of Surface chemistry
Surface chemistry is the study of phenomena that take place at the interfaces of substances or surfaces, such as adsorption, corrosion, heterogeneous catalysis, dissolution, electrode processes, formation of colloids, crystallization, chromatography etc. This branch of chemistry discovers its applications in the industry and in daily life.
What is surface?
Any condensed phase's physical boundary for example solid or liquid is considered as a surface. It divides one phase from the other phase. As a series of points it can be considered, which make a layer or plane where one phase ends and the other starts. The surface may be multi-layered or uni-layered.
The interfaces that is present in between two immiscible liquids such as oil and water; between a gas and a metal such as hydrogen and platinum; a liquid and a gas etc., are some cases.
The interfaces among the two phases can be represented as: phase1-phase2 or phase1/phase2.
What is special about surface?
The atoms at the surface displays exclusive properties that is distinct from those of atoms in the bulk because of the attraction's unbalanced forces that are otherwise known as residual forces.
In the bulk the atoms are enclosed in all directions and therefore the attraction's forces are balanced. Though, the forces of attraction at the surface are unbalanced because they are only attracted from inside. Forces of attraction acting outside are not balanced and therefore are known as residual forces, which gives the unique properties to the surface.
Applications of surfaces:
Most of the part of surface chemistry involves the interaction of surfaces of one system with the particles of other system. Surface plays a vital role in colloid formation, catalysis, electrode reactions, chromatography etc.
