Decomposition of organic matter:
Decomposition and photosynthesis are the two significant procedure of an ecosystem. Litter is an organic chemical-carrier of nutrients existed in various ecosystems. The rate of decomposition is the function of structural components of litter that is the structural components of litter administers the rate of decomposition.
Microorganisms based on substrate specificity colonize the organic matter and decompose it. Although, the organic matter serves two functions for microflora. Initially, it gives energy for growth and secondly it gives carbon source for the formation of new cells. During this procedure, certain waste products are also generated by micro-organisms example, organic acids, carbon-dioxide, methane, and so on. The procedure of conversion of substrate to protoplasmic carbon is termed as assimilation. Around 20-40 percent substrate is assimilated and rest is liberated as carbon-dioxide or accumulated as waste. Whenever the carbon assimilation takes place the other inorganic chemicals like phosphorus, nitrogen, potassium and sulphur are also taken up for the creation of new cells. By this procedure, microorganisms accumulate inorganic substances in their cells and decrease the concentration of nutrients for plants in soil. This event of accumulation of inorganic substance by micro-organisms and making the plants, nutrient-deficient is termed as immobilization.
Whenever organic matter is existed in soil it is steadily rendered into a uniform, dark colored amorphous mass by micro-organisms that are designated as humus. Humus serves as a source of energy for the generation of different groups of microorganisms. As an outcome of decomposition CO2, NH3 and other products are given off. Fungi all along with the other microbial group’s mainly bacteria and actinomycetes decompose the organic matter in soil and liberate the nutrients that are locked up in complex form in organic matter. Though, the procedure of decomposition starts whenever the plants are in senescent phase. After this phase, termites also play a role in physical breaking of the litter. Afterward, micro-organisms of distinct groups colonize the substrate depending upon its chemical composition. Therefore microbial succession takes place on the decomposing material till it is completely disappears in elemental forms. The events of sequential appearance of micro-organisms on a substrate with respect to time are termed as succession. During the course of decomposition, the water-soluble components are metabolized initially. Subsequently, cellulose and hemi-cellulose disappear steadily. The lignins disappear in the final stage of decomposition since these are resistant to decomposition.
