Oxygen molecule, O2:

The electronic configuration of oxygen (i.e., Z = 8) in ground state is 1s22s22p4. Each oxygen atom has 8 electrons; therefore, in O2 molecule there are 16 electrons. Thus, the electronic configuration of O2 is as shown below:

Here (σ1s)2 (σ*1s) part of the configuration is abbreviate as KK. The molecular orbital energy level diagram of O2 molecule is illustrated in figure below:

∴ Bond order = (Nb - Na)/ 2= (8-4)/2 = 2.
