Computed Tomography

Introduction to Computed Tomography Scan And Ultrasound: Computed Tomography:

PRINCIPLE:

A CT scanner is a unique type of x-ray machine. In place of sending a single beam of x-ray by the body as with ordinary x-rays, various beams are sent at the same time from dissimilar angles.

THEORY AND WORKING:

The CT scanner was initially planned to take images of the brain. Currently it is much more advanced and is employed for capturing pictures of virtually any part of the body. If the patient is receiving an abdomen scan, for example they will be told not to eat for six hours before the test. They will be provided a drink consisting of gastrografin a not used flavoured x-ray dye, 45 minutes before the process. This creates the intestine easier to see on the picture. Occasionally a liquid x-ray dye is injected into the veins throughout the test.

The scanner resembles a large doughnut. Throughout the scan the patient lies on a bed, with the body part within examination placed in the opening of the scanner or round tunnel. The bed after that moves slowly backwards and forwards to permit the scanner to take pictures of the body, even though it does not touch the patient. The length of the test relies on the number of pictures and the dissimilar angles taken.

The timing, beam current (mA) and anode voltage (kV) are controlled through a computer by a control bus. The high volt DC power supplies drive an x-ray tube which can be mechanically.

APPLICATIONS:

A. Central Nervous systems, Orthopaedics and bione tumors, thorax.

B. Abdomen, Pelvis and neck.

C. Radio therapy planning.
